The April through June 2005 Highlighted Topics series examines the effects of mechanical force on cells and tissues and the mechanisms by which cells sense mechanical signals and transduce them into downstream pathways that regulate growth, adaptation, and physiological properties. Articles will focus on the mechanisms by which cells sense and respond to matrix rigidity, transduction processes involved in regulating cell growth and phenotype, and biomechanical properties of connective tissues and the role of these properties in the etiology of diseases such as emphysema.
