The January through March 2005 Highlighted Topic series examines a number of aspects of the pulmonary circulation in relation to hypoxia. Considerable attention is given to possible mechanisms of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction, including the role of ion channels, redox state, and mode of oxygen sensing. This series also includes discussions of remodeling of the pulmonary circulation, the possible role of leukocytes in the pulmonary hypertensive process, the pathogenic role of pulmonary hypertension in high-altitude pulmonary edema, and what can be learned from comparative physiology. We acknowledge Steve Graepel, illustrator of the cover design. This illustration is copyrighted by Steve Graepel and reproduced with permission.
