Cover: The January through March 2003 Highlighted Topics series explores plasticity in respiratory motor control. Neuroplasticity of respiratory motor control may involve several levels of the nervous system, from the rhythmic pattern generator in the medulla to chemosensitive areas located both in the periphery as well as in the brain stem to premotoneurons also located in the medulla to motoneurons located in the spinal cord. A better understanding of the mechanisms underlying neuroplasticity may provide hope for functional recovery for the thousands of patients suffering from upper cervical spinal cord injury (as depicted in the cover illustration).
