Cover: The October-December 2001 Highlighted Topics series explores how sex steroid hormones alter physiological responses through regulation of genes on somatic and sex chromosomes. The cover depicts sex steroid hormones as potential modulators of integrated physiological responses in women and men. These effects may be manifested through nongenomic actions such as regulation of enzyme activity or through regulation of gene transcription as depicted by the microarray chip in the background. Evidence will be presented that support these concepts and to suggest ways to test effects of hormones independent of genic expression of XX or XY chromosomes (structure of runners) and potential implications for physiology and medicine. We acknowledge Steve Graepel, illustrator for the cover design. This illustration is copyrighted by the Mayo Foundation and reproduced with permission.
