Cover: US Air Force Research Laboratory centrifuge at Brooks Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX. This centrifuge, placed in service in 1963, is used to investigate physiological responses of the cardiovascular, pulmonary, and nervous systems to increased acceleration force. The research is applied to the development of G-protective systems and techniques for aircrew at levels up to +12 G head-to-foot acceleration, with a maximum onset rate of 6 G/s. (See Hlastala et al. J. Appl. Physiol. 84: 1278-1288, 1998.)
