The January through March 2006 Highlighted Topics series explores the fundamental mechanisms that regulate the cerebral vasculature and cerebral blood flow. A series of nine invited review articles by an international panel of experts examines the influences of the endothelium, the role of astrocytes and of sex hormones on the cerebral vasculature; explores the influence of hypoxia on the fetal and adult cerebral circulations; and discusses the contribution from reactive oxygen species and gaseous messengers. This series was conceived and edited by Guest Editor Dale Pelligrino and Asociate Editor Douglas Seals. We acknowledge Steve Graepel, illustrator of the cover design.
