Volume 95, December 2003

Pages 2333-2344: E. Wrenn Wooten. "Calculation of physiological acid-base parameters in multicompartment systems with application to human blood" (http://jap.physiology.org/cgi/content/full/95/6/2333). Regretfully, the published paper contains multiple errors. The errors and the appropriate corrections are listed below.

  1. On page 2335, first sentence after Eq. 15, the Greek letter phi should be lowercase as follows: {phi}(E) can be equated with the hematocrit (47, 48).
  2. On page 2336, first complete sentence after Eq. 24, the wrong Greek letter was used. The sentence should read as follows: is the molar buffer value of species n, assumed to be constant over the physiological pH range, and {beta}({chi}) is the buffer value of the noncarbonate buffer contribution in compartment {chi} (57).
  3. On page 2336, first sentence after Eq. 30, the Greek letter phi should be lowercase as follows: The hematocrit, {phi}(E), can be expressed as the ratio of the whole blood and erythrocyte concentrations (48).
  4. On page 2337, left column, last two lines, the sentence was written incorrectly. The sentence should now read: At the same time, more recent experimental pKa data for the solvent-accessible histidine imidazole groups of human carbon monoxyhemoglobin were available from a study by Fang et al. (13) at 29°C in 0.1 M HEPES buffer plus 0.1 M chloride.
  5. On page 2337, right column, sixth line, the word "histamine" is incorrect. The sentence should read as follows: {beta}-Histidine ({beta}-His)97 and {beta}-His116, considered nontitratable by Matthew et al. (30), were found to be titratable experimentally by Fang et al. (13).
  6. On page 2339, Table 2, the second column heading should read Cn({chi}), not Ch({chi}). A corrected Table 2 appears below.
  7. On page 2339, Fig. 1 legend, the capital Hb should be replaced by a lowercase Hb, as follows: Average charge per molecule (Hb) vs. erythrocyte pH [pH(E)] under carbonate-free conditions for the human oxyhemoglobin tetramer showing theoretical curves (lines) and experimental data from Ref. 41 at 25°C ({square}) and from Ref. 36 at 37°C ({blacksquare}).
  8. On page 2341, Fig. 5 was presented incorrectly. The legend discusses dotted lines that do not appear on the figure. A new Fig. 5 is given below.

Fig. 5. CB and SID vs. pH(P) for human whole blood and plasma at 37°C, PCO2 = 40.0 Torr, and normal noncarbonate buffer concentrations by using the more complete Eq. 15 (symbols) and the approximate forms of Eqs. 44 and 45. Dotted lines, plasma CB + SID; solid lines, whole blood CB + SID.
