In the center of the videomicroscopic field is a large
alveolus (~200 µm in diameter). This subpleural alveolus is
in an isolated canine lung lobe perfused by autologous blood.
During the first part of the video clip blood flow comes from a single pump.
The arrowheads show capillary blood flow. When the stopwatch in the upper left corner reaches 60.00 s,
a second pump, running in parallel with the first pump, is suddenly turned on
and blood flow rapidly doubles (pulmonary arterial pressure reaches steady state
in <0.5 s). The capillaries recruit rapidly, in this case <2 s.
