REPLY TO BAKER AND DAVIES

To the Editor: We thank Drs. Baker and Davies for their interest in our study (1). If we assume that running on a treadmill is an example of what they describe as "coordinated exercise," then it would appear rather obvious that a contribution to oxygen uptake comes from muscles other than just those in the lower leg. To this end, we made it clear on numerous occasions that our methods only allowed us to quantify a proportion of the muscle that was probably active during the treadmill running exercise. We also acknowledged explicitly (p. 1854) that the lower leg volume represents a relatively small proportion of the total muscle volume involved during running exercise that elicits maximal oxygen uptake. Finally, in drawing the attention of Dr. Baker and Dr. Davies to our conclusion where we indicate that "... an estimate of a proportion of the involved musculature ...", we trust that they are satisfied that an adequate acknowledgement of this limitation was provided thoughout our paper.
