Myoepithelial Cells and Their Function

Helen Wendler Deane 1 and Alexander Forbes 1

1 From the Biological Laboratories, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts

It is suggested that the externally detectable electric response of the mammary gland during ‘let down’ (Forbes, Forbes and Neyland. J. Appl. Physiol. 7: 675, 1955) and of other ectodermal, exocrine glands during discharge may originate in the contracting myoepithelial cells rather than in the secretory cells proper.
