It is suggested that the externally detectable electric response of the mammary gland during let down (Forbes, Forbes and Neyland. J. Appl. Physiol. 7: 675, 1955) and of other ectodermal, exocrine glands during discharge may originate in the contracting myoepithelial cells rather than in the secretory cells proper.
