Use of Unanesthetized Dogs With Fistulas in Teaching Gastrointestinal Physiology

Frank P. Brooks 1, S. M. McCann 1, and John R. Brobeck 1

1 From the Department of Physiology, School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Experiments on digestion for first year medical students were carried out successfully with the use of chronic unanesthetized fistula dogs. Gastric secretion, pancreatic secretion and intestinal motility were studied in the same animal. These experiments appeared to stimulate an interest in gastrointestinal physiology.
