Cholinergic Innervation of the Digital Arteriovenous Anastomoses of Human Skin. A Histochemical Localization of Cholinesterase

Specimens of volar skin of the great toes of five human volunteers were stained for the presence of cholinesterases (method of Koelle). Specific cholinesterase was found in many nerve fibers about the specialized arteriovenous anastomoses of digital skin and about the secretory tubules of eccrine sweat glands. The enzyme was absent about other cutaneous vessels and the ducts of the sweat glands. No significant concentrations of nonspecific cholinesterase were detected about any of these structures. The presence of specific cholinesterase about the digital arteriovenous anastomoses indicates that these vessels possess a cholinergic innervation. On the basis of cited pharmacologic evidence, it is suggested that this innervation is vasodilatory.
