Concentrated suspensions of phospholipid (cephalin) inhibit thromboplastin generation as a result of adsorption or inactivation of factors V and VIII by the phospholipid. Such inhibition can be overcome by increasing the concentration of plasma and serum reagents, or allowing product I to form prior to the addition of phospholipid. Adsorption of plasma reagents with washed sedimented cephalin demonstrates directly the depletion of factors V and VIII.
