Effect of norepinephrine on plasma free fatty acids level in man

Plasma free fatty acid (FFA) and glucose levels were measured in 44 young male subjects who received intravenous infusions of norepinephrine. Dose levels and rates of infusion were independently varied. A significant dose-response relationship was noted for FFA. The time at which the peak response occurred depended on the duration of infusion. A postinfusion fall in FFA level was observed, which suggests that exogenous infusion of norepinephrine may inhibit endogenous lipid-mobilizing mechanisms.
