Circulatory response to ventilatory obstruction during steady-state exercise

A. M. Levy 1, J. S. Hanson 1, and B. S. Tabakin 1

1 Cardiopulmonary Laboratory of the University of Vermont College of Medicine, Mary Fletcher Hospital, Burlington, Vermont

The effects of expiratory airway obstruction on cardiac output during treadmill exercise were studied in nine normal males. Significant changes occurred in all subjects but were unpredictable with regard to magnitude, direction and time of occurrence. The uniformity of the ventilatory response was in sharp contrast to these circulatory variations. Alterations in central blood volume paralleled changes in cardiac output. Physiological mechanisms involved are discussed.
