Estimation of energy expenditure from pulmonary ventilation

Amasa B. Ford 1 and Herman K. Hellerstein 1

1 Department of Medicine, University Hospitals of Cleveland, and the School of Medicine, Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio

A method for estimating energy expenditure from pulmonary ventilation is presented and tested by analysis of 272 observations made under field conditions on 52 factory and steel mill workers. Energy expenditure (Calories/min.) equals 0.173 times ventilation (liters/min., BTPS), minus 0.52, with a standard error of estimate of 0.42 Calories per minute. The use of individual regression lines will permit more accurate estimation of energy expenditure when multiple observations are to be made on one subject.
