Relationship between endoesophageal and intrathoracic pressure variations in dog

G. Milic-Emili 1 and J. M. Petit 1

1 Department of Human Physiology, University of Milan, Milan, Italy and Department of Experimental Medicine, University of Nancy, Nancy, France

In two dogs, intrathoracic and endoesophageal pressure were simultaneously recorded. Between intrathoracic and endoesophageal pressure variations a difference of magnitude was found, depending upon a) the elastance of the esophageal walls and b) the volume/pressure coefficient of the measuring equipment of the endoesophageal pressure. Knowing a) and b) from endoesophageal pressure measurements, intrathoracic pressure variations may be calculated.
