Withdrawal of peripheral lymph from the foot of the dog

Michael H. Silk 1 and Arthur R. R. Mears 1

1 Liesbeek Cancer Research Clinic, Rosebank, Cape Town, South Africa

Peripheral lymph was withdrawn simultaneously from an untreated foot and an x-irradiated foot of anesthetized, healthy dogs. Previous techniques were modified to give large yields of sterile, clot-free lymph. A method is described for addition of anticoagulant solutions at a controlled rate during lymph withdrawal. The pentobarbitone (Sagatal, May Baker) anesthetic content of peripheral lymph was shown to be not greater than 0.05 mg/ml. The protein content of peripheral lymph withdrawn 3 hours after 450 r x-irradiation of the paw was found to be not significantly different from that of normal peripheral dog lymph
