Measurement of blood flow in kidney and isolated segments of intestine

William A. Neely 1 and M. D. Turner 1

1 Departments of Surgery and Biochemistry, University of Mississippi School of Medicine, Jackson, Mississippi

A method is presented for the determination of blood flow in kidney and isolated intestinal segments. It is essentially a modification of the plethysmographic method of Brodie and Russell (J. Physiol. 32: xlvii, 1905). The procedure described here avoids the use of anticoagulants or the introduction of devices into the lumen of the vessels concerned. The reproducibility of this procedure is excellent and correlates well with direct cannulation.
