Effect of Acetazoleamide (Diamox) on Thyroid Function

The administration of acetazoleamide (Diamox), a potent sulfonamide carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, results in a decreased uptake of I131 by the thyroid. This observation raises the question of the possible role of carbonic anhydrase in thyroid function.
