A method for the determination of glucose utilization in vivo is described: a relatively small intravenous load of glucose is administered rapidly and the descending portion of the glucose tolerance curve (911 points) is plotted semilogarithmically. The slope of the straight line thus obtained is a reproducible measure of glucose utilization. Using this method it can be shown that exercise increases in a highly significant manner the rate of glucose utilization in fasted rats and men.
