Calculation of Body Composition

Manuel F. Morales 1 and Arthur R. Williams 1

1 From the Naval Medical Research Institute, Bethesda, Maryland and the University of California, Berkeley, California

The simple analysis underlying estimation of body fat by densitometry and by measurement of body water is summarized and some of the relationships between the two methods are discussed. In particular it is shown analytically that, contrary to widely held ideas, the two methods are based on independent assumptions, so that experimental agreement between the two methods assures the postulates of each.
