The performance of one man in maximal work has been evaluated over a period of 28 years. The highest attainable heart rate declined from 172 to 160 and oxygen consumption from 3.3 to 2.8 liters per minute. Body weight increased 10%; this added to handicaps incident to age alone. Maximal oxygen intake in milliliters per kilogram per minute declined from 45.5 to 35.
