Body Surface Area of Indians

The body surface area of adult males from various parts of India was measured by covering the body with small geometric pieces of inelastic cloth. The surface area calculated by the height times weight formula of DuBois and DuBois was very close to the measured surface area, but the modified formula, Area = Ht.0.647 x Wt.0.409 x 113.1, gave still closer values. Constants for use with linear formulas and proportion of component areas to the surface area of the whole body were calculated from measured values. The constants for head, trunk and hand were 0.276, 0.629 and 2.61, respectively, and proportions of the total for these regions and the arm were 5.8, 32.0, 5.6 and 15.3, respectively. They were significantly different from those given by DuBois (P > 0.01).
