Thirteen rats were given methimazole, 0.11 mg/ml, in their drinking water for 45 days; 12 rats served as controls. The methimazole-treated rats showed a reduction of the metabolic rate and a decline in the heart-weight/body-weight ratio. The spleen and adrenal also showed a decline in weight. All these changes were statistically significant.
