Flow curves of tidal breathing, vital capacity and maximum breathing capacity of a group of 27 normal subjects were obtained with accurate flowmeters. The harmonic and frequency content of these three breathing patterns was determined by an electronic harmonic analyzer. The harmonic spectra of these curves diminish most rapidly in the tidal breathing and least in the vital capacity. The frequency spectrum diminishes most rapidly in the tidal breathing and least in the maximum breathing capacity. There is significant amplitude content, defined as 5% or more of the fundamental, out to about 20 cycles per second in the maximum breathing capacity and to about 4 cps in the vital capacity and tidal breathing. The application of these frequency spectra to instrument design is discussed.
